Just Another day in Paradise

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008Chicago!
Thursday, October 30th, 2008We’ve arrived. This is the view from our humble hotel downtown. That’s the new Trump Tower on the left. When Durry was last here in Chicago the Sun-Times Building was being being destroyed to make way for Trump’s tallest building. The little round building peaking up on the right is one of the Marina Towers….they are round-ish, and I think you may have seen a glimpse of them in the new Batman…that was being filmed the last time I was here with Adam and Clay. It’s 62 degrees. Warmer than Arcata.

Saturday, October 4th, 2008Pumpkin for Halloween?
Monday, September 29th, 2008This was a volunteer plant from some compost mix from the Arcata garden-waste place. It’s been trying to grow now for a couple of months. It just produced its first “fruit” — I assume and hope its a pumpkin. Will it stay warm enough for the pumpkin to get any bigger?
Interesting…this is totally unprotected from the deer. They haven’t been interested. If I had an intentional veggie garden in the same location the deer would have found it already. Go figure.
Shore Acres, North Bend, Oregon
Sunday, September 28th, 2008Saturday afternoon we serendipitously happened upon a beautiful garden at a small state park in North Bend, Oregon. In 1906 Louie Simpson built a house for his wife Cassie along the Pacific Ocean. The house burned down, but his incredible gardens remain….with the help of volunteers of the Friends of Shore Acres. We spent most of our time in the American Rose Society section, but this plant caught my eye, and there was not a name tag for it. These are hard purple berries. Purple.

Two good reasons to have a farm
Friday, September 19th, 2008a doe, a deer, a female deer
Friday, September 19th, 2008Durry was in the dining room looking for our new f-o-x friend, hoping that there would be a return visit. Right on cue, the young fox crawled under the back fence to take a look around. Durry was pretty satified with the siting. We then moved to the living room, and out of the corner of my eye I saw something move. Two deer….one with a small rack, and this one, with little nubbins starting on his brow were out eating ivy. A kid-l eat ivy too, wouldn’t you?
