Chicago Thanksgiving

The turkey was awesome. We did it en papillote. The gravy was salty. The pies were straight-up amazing. All in all, a good thanksgiving.

So as I was walking home the other day, I had an idea for a new way to do bike store websites.
By and large, local bike shops don’t do a good job online, mostly because it (1) seems expensive and (2) seems unnecessary. That’s mostly right. Bike stores don’t need a catalog, because you can pretty much order whatever the customers want. And there’s no need for e-commerce, because other, bigger companies can do it better.
But the great thing about the web is that it can connect people and help you build offline (real) communities. And thinking about the group-ride “thing” that lots of good bike shops do led me to this idea: nextride. Basically any shop could create a site for free (because we’re nice guys and we like bike shops) that would make it SUPER SIMPLE to tell your people when the next group ride would be. You’d get a site called “lifecycle.nxtrd.com”, and people could sign up for notifications and all that, just like with Today In. And it would have your address, number, and the brands you feature.
Thoughts?
Whispering to Durry in some magic, scientific booth.
This museum has changed a lot since we were all last there in 1982. I’m remembering this as the main entrance. Now we enter from below the whole complex. Still no sign of Mon ChiChi.
Waiting for the bus, and looking a little tired. The museum is located in Hyde Park, which is also the location of the University of Chicago. This is the neighborhood where Michelle, Barack, Sasha and Melia live. We did NOT see Bill Ayers lurking around anywhere.
The media has staked out their area for coverage of the Obama Election Day “party”. To the right of the satellite trucks is Grant Park where the tents are set up, baracades are in place. Grant Park is the location of the 1968 Democratic Convention disturbances.
A bit more of the Chicago skyline. We’re on our way to the Field Natural History Museum.
“Sue” the T-Rex. Her bones are all real, located in 1990 in South Dakota.
On the bus going to the haircut appointment.
Look at those curls. My apologies to Clay because the sun and camera makes his hair look rather salt and peppery. His hair is still very brown.

On race day, I tend to be a little gratuitous.

Set to ride fast.

My setup. Langster, Bontrager, Profiles.

Not nervous at all. See?

Playing in the water.

About to disrobe.

Clipping in. Muddy Speedplays.

Run start. Fiddling as usual.

Hamming my way to the finish. Also, sprinting.
8th in my division, 34th out of the guys, 39th overall. 1:24.11 total time, 5:09 swim, 50:03 bike (17 miles, 20.84 mph), 24:05 run (3.1 miles). Good fun.

Somewhere in the water for his Triathlon…..Clay can update us all later with more pics and the results (I stole this picture from his Flicker file).
