Getting ready for the Festivas Season
Monday, September 29th, 2008Pumpkin for Halloween?
Monday, September 29th, 2008This was a volunteer plant from some compost mix from the Arcata garden-waste place. It’s been trying to grow now for a couple of months. It just produced its first “fruit” — I assume and hope its a pumpkin. Will it stay warm enough for the pumpkin to get any bigger?
Interesting…this is totally unprotected from the deer. They haven’t been interested. If I had an intentional veggie garden in the same location the deer would have found it already. Go figure.
Shore Acres, North Bend, Oregon
Sunday, September 28th, 2008Saturday afternoon we serendipitously happened upon a beautiful garden at a small state park in North Bend, Oregon. In 1906 Louie Simpson built a house for his wife Cassie along the Pacific Ocean. The house burned down, but his incredible gardens remain….with the help of volunteers of the Friends of Shore Acres. We spent most of our time in the American Rose Society section, but this plant caught my eye, and there was not a name tag for it. These are hard purple berries. Purple.
