Tiny guys…romping, and then crossed California Avenue.  I’d blame their mother.

Getting ready for the Festivas Season

New L-E-D lights along the back deck.  A racoon or fox was spotted checking them out last night.  The stripped remains of last year’s Chirtsmas tree (on the left) is my Festivas pole.

Pumpkin for Halloween?

Monday, September 29th, 2008

This was a volunteer plant from some compost mix from the Arcata garden-waste place.  It’s been trying to grow now for a couple of months.  It just produced its first “fruit” — I assume and hope its a pumpkin.  Will it stay warm enough for the pumpkin to get any bigger?

Interesting…this is totally unprotected from the deer.  They haven’t been interested.  If I had an intentional veggie garden in the same location the deer would have found it already.  Go figure.

Shore Acres, North Bend, Oregon

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Saturday afternoon we serendipitously happened upon a beautiful garden at a small state park in North Bend, Oregon.   In 1906 Louie Simpson built a house for his wife Cassie along the Pacific Ocean.  The house burned down, but his incredible gardens remain….with the help of volunteers of the Friends of Shore Acres.  We spent most of our time in the American Rose Society section, but this plant caught my eye, and there was not a name tag for it.   These are hard purple berries.  Purple.

Good News from Houston

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Bunnie, Melodie, and Dylan FINALLY have power after nine days without.  Air-conditioning, and maybe no more M.R.E.’s from the FEMA folks.   Bye Bye Ike.
